How your lips are shaped and how they sit within your face

A lip shape consultation in Richmond assesses the shape, definition, symmetry and proportion of your lips, and how they relate to the rest of your face rather than in isolation.

The concern

Understanding this concern

Lips are read as much by their shape and borders as by their size. The line of the upper lip, the balance between the upper and lower lip, the definition of the border and the way the corners sit all shape how the mouth looks when relaxed and when smiling.

Proportion matters here more than a single measurement. Lips that suit one face may look out of place on another, because the mouth is judged against the nose, chin and lower face around it. Many people notice a difference between the two sides, an upper lip that reads as thinner, or a border that has softened over time.

What people often notice

  • Natural shape and symmetry you were born with, including a difference between the left and right sides
  • Softening of the lip border and shape over time as tissue and skin change
  • How the lips relate in size and position to the nose, chin and lower face
  • The way lips flatten or recede in photos, which can differ from how they look in the mirror
In the consultation

A personal, in-person assessment

What Jolene assesses

  • The shape and definition of the upper and lower lip and the clarity of the border
  • The balance between the two lips and the degree of any left-to-right asymmetry
  • How the lips sit in proportion to the nose, chin and the width of the face
  • How the lips look at rest, when speaking and when smiling, since these can differ

What affects suitability

  • Your general health, medical history and any medications that may be relevant
  • Whether your goals relate to shape, definition, symmetry or proportion, as these differ
  • Whether your expectations suit your natural lip anatomy and the surrounding features
  • Individual suitability, which differs between people and can only be assessed in person
During your visit

What happens during this consultation

This is an in-person appointment of about 45 minutes at our Bridge Road clinic, led by Jolene, a cosmetic nurse. She will look at your lips at rest and in movement, ask what you would like to be different, and assess shape, symmetry and how the lips read against the rest of your face.

You will discuss what is realistic for your anatomy and which options, if any, may be appropriate, along with their considerations and risks. Personalised recommendations follow the assessment, and there is no pressure to proceed.

Risks and limitations. Options, risks and results differ between individuals. Shape, definition and proportion are separate concerns and are not solved by the same approach; what suits one face may not suit another. Some asymmetry is normal and may be better left as it is, and in some cases the honest recommendation is that no change is needed. Nothing is decided or promised before an in-person assessment.

What to bring or share

  • Photos of your lips at rest and smiling, including any that show what you would like addressed
  • A list of any medications, supplements and relevant medical history
  • Any examples or notes about the shape or proportion you have in mind

Frequently asked questions

Is a lip consultation only about size?

No. Size is only one part. The assessment looks at shape, the definition of the border, symmetry between the two lips and how the mouth sits in proportion to the rest of your face. Often shape and proportion matter more than size alone.

My lips are slightly uneven. Is that unusual?

Some left-to-right difference is normal and common. Jolene will assess the degree and location of any asymmetry and discuss whether it is worth addressing or best left as it is, based on your individual features.

Will you recommend a specific approach on the day?

Jolene will share personalised observations and any options that may be appropriate, with their considerations and risks. Individual suitability differs between people, so recommendations are made with you after the in-person assessment.

How long does the appointment take and what does it cost to book?

The consultation runs for about 45 minutes in person at our Richmond clinic and is secured with a $30 booking deposit. There is no obligation to proceed with anything discussed.
