Chin projection and how your profile reads from the side
A chin and profile consultation in Richmond assesses chin projection and how your profile balances when viewed side-on, looking at the relationship between the forehead, nose, lips and chin.

Understanding this concern
The profile is the outline of your face seen from the side, and the chin is one of its key anchor points. When the chin sits forward or back relative to the lips, nose and forehead, it changes how balanced the whole side view appears.
A chin that projects too little can make the lower face look set back and can affect how the jawline and neck read from the side. A chin that projects strongly changes the balance in the other direction. Because the profile is a chain of relationships, the chin is always assessed against the features around it rather than on its own.
What people often notice
- Natural bone structure that sets how far the chin projects from birth
- How the chin relates to the lips and nose when viewed from the side
- Changes with age that alter the lower face and the way the profile sits
- Side-on photos, which reveal the profile in a way the mirror often does not
A personal, in-person assessment
What Jolene assesses
- How far the chin projects and how it relates to the lips, nose and forehead in profile
- The balance of the lower face from the side, including the chin-to-neck transition
- Whether the appearance is driven by bone structure, soft tissue or both
- How the profile reads as a whole rather than the chin in isolation
What affects suitability
- Your general health, medical history and any medications that may be relevant
- Whether your concern is structural or related to soft tissue, as this shapes the options
- Whether your goals are realistic for your underlying profile and anatomy
- Individual suitability, which differs between people and can only be assessed in person
What happens during this consultation
This is an in-person appointment of about 45 minutes at our Bridge Road clinic, led by Jolene, a cosmetic nurse. She will look at your profile from the side, assess how the chin relates to the surrounding features and ask what you notice most in side-on photos.
You will discuss what is shaping your profile and which options, if any, may be appropriate, with their considerations and risks. Personalised recommendations follow the assessment, and there is no pressure to proceed.
Risks and limitations. Options, risks and results differ between individuals. Profile balance depends on several features working together, and adjusting the chin alone does not always change how the side view reads. Some aspects are set by bone structure and may be better addressed another way or left unchanged, and in some cases the honest recommendation is that no intervention is needed. Nothing is decided or promised before an in-person assessment.
What to bring or share
- A clear side-on photo or two, taken in even light, alongside a front-facing photo
- A list of any medications, supplements and relevant medical history
- Notes on what you notice about your profile and what prompted your interest

Frequently asked questions
Why does my profile look different in photos than in the mirror?
The mirror mostly shows you a front-on view, while side-on photos reveal the profile, including how the chin projects. That is why many people first notice a profile concern in a photograph rather than day to day.
Is the chin the only thing that affects my profile?
No. The profile is a chain of relationships between the forehead, nose, lips and chin. Jolene assesses how they sit together, because the chin is judged against the features around it rather than on its own.
Will you decide on an approach at the consultation?
Jolene will share personalised observations and any options that may be appropriate, with their considerations and risks. Individual suitability differs between people, so recommendations are made with you after the in-person assessment.
How long does the appointment take and what does it cost to book?
The consultation runs for about 45 minutes in person at our Richmond clinic and is secured with a $30 booking deposit. There is no obligation to proceed with anything discussed.
