The lines that show up when your face moves

An expression line consultation in Richmond looks at the lines that appear when you move your face, across the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes, and how movement, skin and time each play a part.

The concern

Understanding this concern

Expression lines are the creases that appear when you raise your brows, frown or smile. Early on they show only during the movement and settle once your face relaxes. These are sometimes called dynamic lines.

Over years of repeated movement, and as skin changes, some of these lines begin to linger even at rest. Where a line sits, how deep it is and whether it is present only in movement or also at rest all matter, because the causes and the sensible options are not the same for every line.

What people often notice

  • Repeated everyday movements such as raising the brows, squinting in bright Melbourne light or concentrating at a screen
  • Skin changes over time, including reduced elasticity, which lets creases hold rather than spring back
  • Sun exposure and lifestyle factors that affect how skin recovers from repeated folding
  • Individual factors such as skin type, the strength of your facial movements and your natural resting expression
In the consultation

A personal, in-person assessment

What Jolene assesses

  • Which lines are present only during movement and which remain when your face is at rest
  • The location and depth of each line and how it behaves as you make different expressions
  • The condition and quality of the skin overlying the lines, including how well it recovers
  • How your resting expression and natural movement patterns contribute to what you are noticing

What affects suitability

  • Your general health, medical history and any medications that may be relevant
  • Whether the lines are chiefly dynamic, chiefly at rest, or a combination, as this shapes what may be appropriate
  • Your goals and whether they are realistic for the type and depth of line involved
  • Individual suitability, which differs between people and is assessed in person
During your visit

What happens during this consultation

This is an in-person appointment of about 45 minutes at our Bridge Road clinic, led by Jolene, a cosmetic nurse. She will watch how your face moves, ask which lines bother you and when you notice them most, and look closely at the skin involved.

You will explore what is driving the lines you have described and what, if anything, may be appropriate to consider. Options and their risks are explained honestly, and personalised recommendations follow the assessment. There is no pressure to proceed.

Risks and limitations. Options, risks and results differ between individuals. A line seen only in movement, one that has set into the skin and one driven by skin quality are different situations that may call for different approaches or none at all. Some lines are a normal feature of an expressive face and may be better left alone. Nothing is decided or promised before an in-person assessment.

What to bring or share

  • Photos that show the lines you are concerned about, ideally in movement and at rest
  • A list of any medications, supplements and relevant medical history
  • Notes on when you notice the lines most, such as in certain light or after a long day

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a dynamic line and a static one?

A dynamic line appears only while your face is moving and settles when you relax. A static line stays visible at rest. Many lines start as dynamic and become more set over time, and the two can call for different considerations.

Do expression lines mean my skin is damaged?

Not necessarily. Expression lines are a normal result of years of everyday movement in an active, expressive face. Skin quality and sun exposure can influence how readily lines set, which is part of what Jolene assesses.

Can you tell me what will happen to a specific line?

Jolene will share observations about the lines you point out and any options that may be appropriate, with their considerations. Individual suitability differs, so recommendations are personalised and made after the in-person assessment, not before.

How long does the appointment take and what does it cost to book?

The consultation runs for about 45 minutes in person at our Richmond clinic and is secured with a $30 booking deposit. There is no obligation to proceed with anything discussed.
